Play As One (PAO) is a faith-driven nonprofit dedicated to transforming lives through sports, arts, vocation, and education. Since 2014, we’ve served over 6,000 students in Escondido with the help of 1,300+ volunteers, equipping young people and families to grow in faith and purpose.
The Chick Embrey Classic honors a legendary Escondido coach whose life reflected faith, mentorship, and excellence. His legacy continues through PAO as we inspire the next generation to live and lead in Christ.
Coach Robert “Chick” Embrey: A Lasting Legacy
Coach Embrey shaped generations of Escondido athletes and students through faith and mentorship. As head football coach from 1956, he led his teams to 144 wins, 11 league titles, and 3 section championships before retiring as a teacher in 1988.
A lifelong Escondido resident, Navy veteran, and devoted husband to Ann for 72 years, his influence extended far beyond sports. Former players recall his steadfast faith and encouragement—a legacy PAO proudly carries forward to inspire young people and families in Christ.
